Commercials like this one below are a big deal. I'm 44, and can still remember when black people were only in commercials to sell things to black people. Such ads usually had music with heavy bass in it. Then, not too many years ago black folks started appearing in commercials that were selling things to, well, anybody. A black person would appear as an insurance agent, or an office worker, or a neighbor. But I never saw a black person appear as a spouse to a white person, until now.

I agree Jesse... Even if it reflects America (over 9 million mixed Americans), and advertising should represent and hold a mirror up to society - it is still disruptive and breaks clutter. So many brands "don't want the letters" and the hassle of accurately portraying and reflecting culture. I remember growing up in the 70s and 80s and my relatives calling other relatives and friends when a Black person was on TV because there were so few... or Jet magazine spotlighting the Black actors featured on TV that week because again there were so few on TV which is crazy since we were driving so much of culture... 4/16/2014 06:17:38 pm
